Alchemy is more similiar to science, not magic, right? I myself am not familiar with the historical/fictional definitions since the most I've exposed myself to it would be the Secret Series and playing as Xavier in Eternal Champions. (Who, by the way, I am uber leet as. Canes FTW!) I don't like the idea of having too much hardcore magic in SA. It can be fun in a lighter, fictional context such as it has been so far, but I don't like to take that sort of thing too far.
