Well, at first, the sentences:

made me think that you as an author just didn't have a reason for his unawareness, but then later it is clarified that he was specifically avoiding magical aid while living in Roveros, so I can see why he would suddenly recall.
As for the sunglasses, I just don't see many wizards with them, so forgive me if I find adjusting to this awesomeness difficult. :P Also, I find that one must wear a hat or glasses. Not both. Too much hassle at banks. :P
