Summary
The Stromlings are the footsoldiers of the Forces of Maelstrom, corruptions of creatures infected with Maelstrom Energy to serve the Darkitect.
The Stromlings are the front line forces of the Maelstrom's effort to infect the universe.  They typically take the bodies of infected creatures, including minifigures dead or alive.  Dead minifigures can be reanimated by the essence of the Maelstrom, like zombies, but the similarity to dumb, slow zombies ends there because these are cunning, fast-moving Stromlings.  Living minifigures turned into Stromlings are in a compromised state - infection eventually obliterates their Creative Spark, so creatures of Imagination they are no longer, yet their consciousness can remain albeit in perpetual agony.  Most infected lose their minds in the infection process and in that way become as mindless as the typical Stromling.  Others attempt to hold on, only to slowly, painfully slip into the darkness...

Yet some Stromlings do not feel this pain, and rather can maintain their sentience after infection, but do not believe they are unscathed, as their preexistant personality becomes corrupted. Honesty becomes deceit, humility becomes pride, satisfaction becomes lust.  Good becomes evil.  Either natural immunity, a strong mind's commitment to survive, or manipulation at the hand of the Darkitect enables this phenomena by which intelligent Stromlings are formed, then taking the places of tacticians in helping lead and direct their underlings in the mindless masses of the Maelstrom army.

Disinfection
Chainsaw Stromling
It is possible to disinfect Stromlings. The probability of success depends on how far the infection process has gone before treatment. With assistance, a minifigure's Creative Spark can fight off the infection like the immune system fights an infectious disease, if the Creative Spark is still in any way or form present. If the Creative Spark is absent, as is the case in long-infected Stromlings, successful disinfection by standard means is impossible. According to a Paradox theory, an artificial Creative Spark can be implanted into a Stromling and its body restored, but success is based on the question, does anything remain of the mind?
A variation of the basic Stromling, Chainsawlings develop a more lethal chainsaw-arm weapon and exhibit super speed.

Hammer Stromling
Another variation of the basic Stromling, Hammerlings develop a hammer-arm weapon. The heaviest hitting and most physically destructive of the basic Stromlings, they pose greater threats to infrastructure.

Stromling Admiral
As with the pirates, the Stromling Admirals are corruptions of higher ranking pirates. They tend to carry heavier arms than regular pirates.

Types of Stromlings

Basic Stromling

The basic Stromling is a corruption of the typical human. Their appearances can vary wildly depending on the time passed from infection, usually indicated by states of decay, calcification, and crystallization. Most all basic Stromlings develop weapons, typically a blade-arm.

Chainsaw Stromling

A variation of the basic Stromling, Chainsawlings develop a more lethal chainsaw-arm weapon and exhibit super speed.

Hammer Stromling

Another variation of the basic Stromling, Hammerlings develop a hammer-arm weapon. The heaviest hitting and most physically destructive of the basic Stromlings, they pose greater threats to infrastructure.

Stromling Pirate

The Stromling Pirate variation is based on infected pirates from Galaz, many of whom were infected after the explosion of Crux.

Stromling Admiral

As with the pirates, the Stromling Admirals are corruptions of higher ranking pirates. They tend to carry heavier arms than regular pirates.

Stromling Mech

The non-humanoid Stromling Mechs are corruptions of the Assembly Defense Robots, originally deployed to defend Nexus Force establishments, but overrun and infected by the Spider Queen during her escape from the Paradox Research Facility on Avant Gardens. They are so terrifying and effective as Forces of Maelstrom that entire Maelstrom factories are dedicated to their mass production.

Dark Ronin

Ancient suits of legendary armor reanimated with Maelstrom Energy that Dark Ronin are without bodies to kill, making them difficult to stop and capable of much destruction.

Maelstrom Horseman

The Horsemen are Dark Ronin astride corrupted horses.

Dark Spiderling

Heavily armed and armored Spiderlings are the offspring of Maelstrom Spiders.

Maelstrom Spider

Heavily armed and armored, an individual Maelstrom Spider is a force to reckoned with, and a cluster is nearly unstoppable.
