The F-131 ''Star Phoenix'' was launched in 2502 alongside the [[USFI Star Falcon II|F-114b ''Star Falcon II'']] and [[USFI Star Cruiser I|F-115 ''Star Cruiser'']], establishing [[Star Force]]'s famous fighter trifecta of the early 26th century.<br />

''Phoenixes'' were intended to be better dogfighters than ''Star Falcons'', with lighter mass, narrower profiles, and more traditionally aggressive airframes, ideally increasing their survivability in fighter-on-fighter engagements. Like the ''Falcons'', they are versatile platforms capable of a wide range of operations. <br />

While flight dynamics differed between the two, scientific performance revealed insignificant practical difference between the ''Phoenix'' and ''Falcon'' platforms. Where the ''Phoenix'' gained an edge was favorability, however; to many, it was the best looking of Star Force's new fighters.<br />

Armed with two powerful MP1200 phasers, four MP750s, a torpedo launcher, and mounts for additional external weapons (commonly loaded with single-use bombs and rockets), the ''Star Phoenix'' was a formidable fighter. It was succeeded by the [[USFI Star Phoenix II|F-131b ''Star Phoenix II'']] in 2505 (at this point it was retroactively reclassified F-131a ''Star Phoenix I'').<br />
