New page

Stirling Silverstine wrote:
I've always thought the Curse was a 'electical/''energy''' curse and less so of a '''tech''' curse. Muskets would work in my opinion because it is simply sparks and minerals causing an explosion. When you break it down, it's very little to do with 'tech'.Â

If it's being put towards a vote, I say it affects the energy/power itself, and not the actual workings of the tech it's powering. Thus why something like magical clockwork gnomes migh work, while giant robots powered by nuclear generators won't. Both are rather 'high-tech' for Militeregnum, but one is running off of the "Terrible outsider power of electricity" while the other is simply running off of Magic.

Does that make sense to anyone other than me? :P

But technology is a term that defines many things and is not limited in electrical technology; catapults are technology as well. And so are gunpowder, clockwork and steampunk. There are two ways we can go about this. Either that the Sorcerer banned all that he considered foreign to his land, thus ending electricity and possibly some other things (but possibly not all technology has to show; since the Sorcerer wasn't knowledgeable in technology he couldn't know all that it had to offer and thus ban it all; since we can't assume all modern and super-modern technology relies on electricity, it could be possible that he did not ban other forms of technology) or that he banned any further technological advancement.

It seems more logical that the Sorcerer would just stop all the advancement of technology. It fits better with the image of magic and magicians. Magicians do not understand (modern and super-modern) science and technology and thus they cannot manipulate it properly. A magician doesn't know anything about the flow of electrons. They can only know the result of it (e.g. the light of a lamp) and so can only affect the result. A magician could make a lamp's light vanish, but they would have to continually affect it to do it, as they don't know that if they cut off the flow of electrons the light will stop on its own). Similarly, in the more complex example of a computer magicians would be at a loss if they wanted to meddle with it. They could change the pictures showing on the screen and they could cause physical damage to it, but they couldn't for instance hack it through magic. In the same way, it seems unreasonable that the Sorcerer should just ban all technology. In my opinion, from an author's point of view wishing magic (when someone's will of even the most extraordinary and complicated things is enough for the thing to happen, without worrying how it happens; for instance, it would be unreasonable for a magician to destroy the stars, if he had no idea what the stars really were) should be discouraged.

To address your statement about electrical/energy curse. I am afraid that it cannot be an electrical/energy curse. That is because energy is everywhere and it is a much more general term than electricity or technology. To ban energy (if we considerd that it made sense to say that someone bans energy) would mean to ban movement, gravity, magnetic fields, springs' functionability, atomic and molecular structure and pretty much everything's ability to do anything, to name a few things off the top of my head. And that's without even considering the equivalency of mass and energy. Thus, you can only mean it's an electrical curse, which is rather too specific to effectively ban anything we would like to have banned, for reasons explained above.

You also made an example of a magical clockwork and a nuclear robot. I'll have to say that these are not good examples. A magical clockwork is magical so it's functionability is unrelated to the curse, while nuclear technology is not electrical technology. While something nuclear would probably be connected to something electrical, as nuclear energy would be converted to electrical, we can't assume that always to be the case. Someone could invent the technology to convert nuclear energy into some other form of energy instead of electrical and thus why would the curse stop this technology? Indeed in the simpler example of a nuclear bomb, I have an even higher doubt over whether any electricity is required, as the nuclear energy just becomes thermal energy, soundwaves and photons (light).

Having said all that, I don't mind much either way.
